Weaning is the most stressful single management event in the beef cattle calendar. Get it wrong and you face immune-suppressed calves, post-weaning weight loss, respiratory disease outbreaks, and cows that fail to rebreed on time. Get it right and both calves and cows transition smoothly. This guide covers optimal weaning age, fence-line weaning, nutrition for weaners, and managing the BRD risk that peaks in the post-weaning period.
Weaning — the permanent separation of calves from their dams — is physiologically and psychologically the most disruptive event in a calf's life. At weaning, the calf simultaneously loses its primary food source, its social bond with its mother, and the environmental familiarity of its birth paddock. For the dam, weaning ends the nutritional drain of lactation and begins the process of cycling and reconceiving. When managed well, both outcomes are positive and the transition is completed with minimal production loss. When managed poorly, the consequences extend through the entire production cycle: immune-suppressed calves catch bovine respiratory disease (BRD), lose weight instead of gaining it, and take months to recover the ground they lost; cows that were already in poor condition at weaning take longer to return to oestrus and either miss the joining window or conceive late in the joining period.
When to wean: optimal age and weight
The standard weaning age in Australian beef systems is 6 to 8 months, and this range reflects a genuine biological optimum rather than arbitrary convention. By 5 to 6 months of age, a calf's rumen has developed sufficiently to digest and extract nutrition from dry feed — grass, hay, and grain — with reasonable efficiency. Before this point, the rumen is still developing and the calf is heavily dependent on milk for its nutritional needs; early weaning before 4 months requires intensive management and high-quality supplementary feed to prevent growth setbacks. After 8 to 9 months, the calf is still benefiting from milk but the cow's milk production has typically declined substantially, and the calf's nutritional demands increasingly exceed what the cow can supply through lactation — at this point the cow is feeding an increasingly inefficient converter at ongoing nutritional cost to herself.
Body weight at weaning is as important as age. A target of at least 180 to 200 kg liveweight for Bos taurus calves and 160 to 180 kg for Brahman-cross calves at weaning ensures adequate rumen development and fat reserves to buffer the post-weaning growth check. Calves below these weights at the standard weaning age have either had poor nutrition, poor dam milk production, or health issues — these calves should be weaned carefully with high-quality supplementary feed available from day one, not just pushed into a paddock with dry grass.
Early weaning as a drought management tool
Early weaning — separating calves at 3 to 4 months of age rather than the standard 6 to 8 months — is used strategically in Australian beef production as a drought management response. The logic is sound: a lactating cow requires approximately 70 to 100% more energy than a dry, non-pregnant cow. By removing the calf and ending lactation, the cow's daily feed requirement drops dramatically, allowing you to maintain more cows through a drought period on the same feed budget — or to maintain the same number of cows at better body condition.
Early weaning works as a strategy only if you can provide the early-weaned calves with adequate nutrition to compensate for the milk they are no longer receiving. Early weaners require access to high-quality hay (legume hay or good-quality cereal hay with crude protein above 12%), a protein-energy concentrate supplement, fresh water always available, and shelter from cold and wind. The feed cost of early weaners is significant — budget carefully before committing to this strategy, and compare the economics of feeding weaners intensively versus selling them and buying back after the drought.
Fence-line weaning: the evidence-based method
Fence-line weaning — separating calves and cows with a fence they can see, smell, and hear through but cannot cross, maintaining this partial contact for 7 to 10 days before complete separation — is the most evidence-supported low-stress weaning method available to Australian producers. Research consistently shows that fence-line weaned calves show lower cortisol levels (a marker of stress), spend less time vocalising and pacing, and maintain better feed and water intake in the post-weaning period compared to calves weaned by complete immediate separation.
Implementing fence-line weaning requires appropriate paddock layout — the calf paddock and cow paddock must share a fenceline that allows nose contact without physical crossing. A good standard fence (page wire or electric) is adequate; the animals do not need to be able to see each other clearly at distance, just maintain proximity through the shared fence. After 7 to 10 days of fence-line contact, calves have typically settled into new feeding patterns and can be completely separated — moved to a paddock without fence-line cow contact — with minimal additional disturbance.
The practical requirements for fence-line weaning: adequate paddock layout (not all properties have adjacent paddocks that allow this), adequate water in both the calf and cow paddocks during the contact period, and monitoring of both groups daily during the fence-line phase to catch any animals that breach the fence or show signs of distress or illness.
Nutrition for weaners in the first 30 days
The 30 days immediately following weaning are the highest nutritional risk period for young cattle. Feed intake drops sharply at weaning as calves adjust to dry feed without the milk supplement they have been receiving, and this reduced intake — combined with the immune suppression caused by weaning stress — creates a window of vulnerability to disease and growth setback that persists for 3 to 4 weeks.
The nutritional priorities for weaners in the first 30 days:
- Quality hay available at all times: good-quality meadow hay or cereal hay with crude protein above 10% provides the rumen microbial substrate that developing rumen function requires. Poor hay (mature, low-CP hay) does not support post-weaning growth and is false economy at this stage.
- Fresh, clean water always accessible: weaners are more sensitive to water quality and access than adult cattle. Check water troughs daily during the post-weaning period and ensure all calves are finding and using the water source.
- Mineral supplement: a weaner-specific loose mineral lick or commercially formulated weaner pellet provides the trace minerals (copper, selenium, zinc) that support immune function during the stress-susceptible post-weaning period. Deficiency at this stage has disproportionate consequences for long-term performance.
- Introduce grain gradually if grain is to be used: grain-based energy supplements improve weaner growth rates significantly but must be introduced gradually over 14 to 21 days to prevent acidosis in unadapted rumens. Start at 0.3 to 0.5 kg per day and increase incrementally.
Bovine respiratory disease: the post-weaning risk
Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) — pneumonia — is the most economically significant health risk in the post-weaning period, particularly in operations where calves from multiple mobs are mixed at weaning or moved to yards and handling facilities with multiple stress events concentrated in a short period. The BRD complex involves multiple viral (IBR, BRSV, PI3, BVD) and bacterial (Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida) pathogens acting in sequence — the viral infection depresses immunity, allowing secondary bacterial pneumonia to establish.
The early signs of BRD in weaners: depression and separation from the group, reduced feed and water intake, nasal discharge (initially clear, then cloudy or yellow-green), coughing, and elevated respiratory rate. Take rectal temperature on any weaner showing these signs — a temperature above 40°C with respiratory signs is BRD until proven otherwise. Early antibiotic treatment (within 24 hours of first signs) is essential for good outcomes; delayed treatment allows bacterial infection to establish deeper in the lung tissue, causing permanent scarring that reduces respiratory capacity and growth performance for the life of the animal.
BRD prevention strategies for post-weaning: minimise the number of stressors concentrated in a short period (avoid weaning, processing, transport, and mob mixing all in the same 48-hour window), ensure weaners are immunised against the viral components (IBR and BVD vaccination 3 to 4 weeks before weaning where practical), and maintain good nutrition immediately before and after weaning to support immune function.
Post-weaning cow management
The cow side of weaning is as important as the calf side. At weaning, every cow should be body condition scored, and the result should drive her management for the next joining period. A cow that has maintained BCS 2.5 or above through lactation is in good shape for reconceiving; a cow below BCS 2.5 at weaning needs targeted nutritional management to recover condition before joining.
The post-weaning period is also when mastitis can develop in cows that are slow to dry off — the udder engorgement that occurs in the first few days after calf removal, when milk production continues briefly without the stimulation of suckling, creates a temporary mastitis risk. In most beef cows this resolves naturally within a few days; cows with hot, painful, swollen quarters a week after weaning need veterinary attention.
