A sound cattle health program is one of the most important investments a beef producer makes — not because disease events are necessarily frequent, but because when they occur the economic impact is significant, and because prevention is consistently cheaper than treatment or loss. This guide covers the core health management events in the Australian beef cattle calendar: vaccination, internal parasite management, tick control, and the key diseases every Australian cattle producer needs to be able to recognise and respond to.

The Core Vaccination Program

Annual vaccination against clostridial diseases is the non-negotiable foundation of any Australian cattle health program. Clostridial diseases — blackleg, pulpy kidney, malignant oedema, tetanus, and related conditions — are caused by Clostridium bacteria that are ubiquitous in Australian soils and can kill healthy cattle rapidly with no prior warning. Vaccination is highly effective, inexpensive relative to the losses it prevents, and requires only one management event per year (after an initial two-dose sensitisation in calves).

The standard Australian protocol uses a 5-in-1 vaccine (covering five clostridial diseases) or a 7-in-1 (adding leptospirosis coverage to the five clostridials). The choice between 5-in-1 and 7-in-1 depends on the leptospirosis risk in your area — in cattle-and-pig or cattle-and-rodent environments, and where people (particularly young children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals) have regular contact with cattle, leptospirosis vaccination is strongly recommended. Leptospirosis is a zoonosis — humans can contract it from infected cattle urine, particularly through skin abrasions or mucous membrane contact.

Calves should receive their first clostridial vaccination at marking (typically 4 to 8 weeks of age), with a booster 4 to 6 weeks later. After this sensitisation, annual boosters given 4 to 6 weeks before the highest-risk period (typically spring in southern Australia, wet season in the north) maintain protective immunity. Cows vaccinated 4 to 6 weeks before calving pass elevated antibody levels through colostrum to their calves, providing passive protection through the first weeks of life.

Internal Parasite Management in Cattle

Cattle are affected by internal parasites — primarily gastrointestinal roundworms including Ostertagia ostertagi (brown stomach worm), Cooperia, and Haemonchus placei — but the economic impact is generally less severe than in small ruminants, because adult cattle develop significant acquired immunity to most gastrointestinal nematodes. Young cattle (under 18 months) are the most susceptible age class, and the timing and targeting of drenching in cattle should focus on this group.

Strategic drenching of cattle focuses on three key events: at weaning (cattle are most stressed and immunologically challenged at weaning, making this the highest-risk period for worm-related production loss), before winter in southern Australia (reducing the worm population carried into the cooler months), and occasionally in spring in high-worm-burden areas of coastal eastern Australia. Faecal egg count monitoring — the same tool used in sheep and goat programs — is equally applicable to cattle and allows targeted, evidence-based treatment rather than calendar drenching.

Liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) is an important additional parasite in wetter areas of eastern and southeastern Australia, particularly on flooded river flats and irrigation areas. Unlike gastrointestinal roundworms, adult cattle do not develop significant immunity to liver fluke and remain susceptible throughout their lives. If your property has snail-prone wet areas and cattle show signs of poor condition, anaemia, or bottle jaw, fluke should be investigated — standard cattle drenches do not treat fluke; a triclabendazole or closantel product is required.

Tick Management

Cattle tick (Rhipicephalus australis) is restricted to the tick fever buffer zone and the tick-endemic zone of coastal and sub-coastal Queensland and small areas of northern NSW and the NT. Ticks transmit tick fever (babesiosis and anaplasmosis), which can cause severe anaemia and rapid death in susceptible cattle. Cattle in tick-endemic areas acquire natural immunity to tick fever if exposed gradually from a young age — this is why Brahman and Droughtmaster cattle from tick country can tolerate tick challenge that would rapidly kill naive southern cattle of the same species.

Management in tick zones combines strategic acaricide treatment (dipping or spraying with an approved acaricide on a defined schedule based on tick burden and season) with tick fever vaccination for naive cattle being introduced to tick country. Any cattle being moved from tick-free southern areas into tick country should be vaccinated and introduced gradually with veterinary guidance — the risk of tick fever mortality in unprotected, naive southern cattle exposed suddenly to high tick challenge is very real.

Key Diseases to Know

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) — commonly called pneumonia — is the most economically significant cattle disease in feedlot and intensive management situations, and an important consideration in weaned calves in all production systems. It is typically multi-factorial: stress (weaning, transport, yarding), viral infection (bovine respiratory syncytial virus, IBR virus, PI3), and secondary bacterial infection combine to cause disease. Prevention centres on minimising stress around weaning and transport, vaccination against the primary viral components (IBR, BVD), and prompt treatment of early cases with appropriate antibiotics under veterinary guidance.

Bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) is a significant viral disease with production impacts including reproductive failure, immunosuppression, and occasionally acute disease. The most important BVD management issue is the persistently infected (PI) animal — cattle infected in utero before the immune system develops become lifelong virus shedders that silently infect the whole herd. Identifying and removing PI cattle (tested with ear notch ELISA) dramatically reduces herd BVD exposure. Vaccination is available and recommended in herds with known BVD problems or high-risk exposure history.

Pinkeye (infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, caused by Moraxella bovis) causes eye ulceration, pain, and temporary or permanent blindness in affected cattle, with significant welfare and production impacts. It spreads readily in dusty conditions, between cattle at water troughs, and by face flies. Treatment with antibiotic eye preparations applied early is effective; advanced cases with deep ulceration require veterinary intervention. Fly control during peak pinkeye season (typically summer) reduces transmission rates.

Milk fever (hypocalcaemia) primarily affects dairy cattle around calving, but can occur in beef cows with high milk production and twins. Recumbent cows around calving who are not in obvious labour distress should be considered for calcium supplementation — 400 mL of 40% calcium borogluconate given slowly IV or under the skin in four sites is the standard treatment. Always wear gloves during IV calcium administration as accidental IV access is dangerous.
