Drenching is the practical term for administering an anthelmintic — a worming treatment — to livestock, usually as an oral liquid, paste, pour-on, or injectable, to kill internal parasites such as roundworms, liver fluke, and lungworm. For hobby farmers new to the term, think of it simply as "worming your animals," much like deworming a dog or cat, but on a larger scale and with more serious consequences if it's neglected.

Worm control matters because internal parasites quietly rob livestock of condition long before obvious symptoms appear. Worms compete for nutrients, damage the gut lining, cause anaemia and scouring, and in young or stressed animals can lead to severe weight loss or even death. Left unmanaged, a heavy worm burden suppresses growth rates, reduces wool and milk production, lowers fertility, and weakens the immune system, making animals more susceptible to other diseases. Because pasture-based grazing constantly exposes animals to worm larvae shed in manure, drenching at the right times, with the right product, and at the right dose is one of the most important routine health tasks on any livestock property.

Drenching Cattle

Cattle are affected by a different parasite profile than sheep and goats, with the most economically significant being gut roundworms such as Ostertagia (brown stomach worm) and Cooperia, along with lungworm (Dictyocaulus) in some regions and liver fluke in wetter, snail-prone areas.

Timing is critical to effective cattle worm control. The highest-risk periods are around weaning, when calves lose the partial immunity benefit of their dam's presence and are moved onto pasture they may share with older, shedding animals. A drench at or shortly after weaning is considered standard practice on most properties. Additional strategic drenches are often timed for autumn (to remove worm burdens picked up over a wet summer) and again pre-calving for breeding cows, when immune suppression around calving can allow worm numbers to rise.

Application methods for cattle generally fall into three categories:

  • Oral drenches are dosed directly into the mouth via a drench gun and are considered highly accurate when correctly calibrated, making them a reliable choice for young or valuable stock.
  • Pour-on formulations are applied along the backline and absorbed through the skin — convenient and low-stress to apply, but more susceptible to under-dosing in wet weather or thick-coated animals, and some classes offer less reliable efficacy against certain worm species.
  • Injectable drenches offer an alternative delivery method, often combined with other treatments such as vitamin boosters, though they require more handling care and correct site selection.

Rotating between different chemical groups (rather than relying on a single drench family year after year) and using faecal egg counts (FECs) to confirm worm burden before treating are both recommended to slow the development of drench resistance in cattle, which — while historically less of a concern than in sheep — is increasingly being reported in Australian herds.

Drenching Sheep & Goats

Sheep and goats share many of the same worm species — including Haemonchus contortus (barber's pole worm), Trichostrongylus, and Teladorsagia — but worm control strategy and dosing differ meaningfully between the two species, and this is one of the most common mistakes made by hobby farmers running mixed flocks.

Worm resistance is now a significant and well-documented issue across the Australian sheep industry. Decades of frequent, whole-flock drenching have selected for worm populations that survive treatment from one or more chemical groups (white drenches/benzimidazoles, clear drenches/levamisole, and macrocyclic lactones such as ivermectin and moxidectin, among others).   • Practising refugia — deliberately leaving a portion of the healthiest animals undrenched at each treatment — to maintain a population of drench-susceptible worms that dilutes resistant genetics in the overall worm population.
  • Avoiding unnecessary "calendar drenching" and instead drenching based on FEC results, body condition, and weather-driven worm risk.

Goat dosage differences are critical to understand, because goats are not simply "small sheep" when it comes to drug metabolism. Goats process most anthelmintic drugs significantly faster than sheep do, clearing them from their system more quickly and reducing the drug's effective contact time with worms. As a result, goats typically require higher doses — commonly 1.5 to 2 times the equivalent sheep dose for the same drench family — to achieve comparable efficacy. Using a sheep-rate dose on goats is one of the most common causes of poor worm control and accelerated resistance in mixed sheep-and-goat operations. Always check the product label specifically for goat dose rates, and where a product isn't registered for goats, seek veterinary advice on appropriate off-label dosing rather than guessing.

Equipment & Withholding Periods

Even the best drench product will underperform if it isn't delivered accurately, and ignoring withholding requirements can have real legal and market consequences.

Calibrating a drench gun is a simple but frequently skipped step that has an outsized impact on treatment success. Before drenching a mob:

  1. Draw a measured volume (for example, 10 mL) through the gun into a calibrated syringe or measuring cup.
  2. Compare the dispensed amount against the gun's dial setting — many guns drift out of calibration with repeated use, wear, or being knocked during yard work.
  3. Adjust the gun or replace worn seals/o-rings if the dispensed volume doesn't match the setting.
  4. Re-check calibration periodically throughout a large drenching session, as guns can shift partway through a mob.

Under-dosing is one of the single biggest drivers of drench resistance because it exposes worms to a sub-lethal concentration of the active ingredient — enough to select for resistant survivors, but not enough to kill them outright. Always dose to the heaviest animal in a drafted group (rather than an average estimate), and weigh a representative sample with a weigh scale or weigh band rather than guessing by eye.

Withholding periods (WHP) and Export Slaughter Intervals (ESI) are regulatory timeframes that must be observed after drenching, and they are not interchangeable:

  • The Withholding Period (WHP) is the minimum time that must pass after treatment before an animal (or its milk, in the case of dairy animals) can be sent for domestic slaughter or sale for human consumption, ensuring chemical residues drop to a legally acceptable level.
  • The Export Slaughter Interval (ESI) applies specifically to animals destined for export markets, which often have stricter residue tolerances than the domestic market — meaning the ESI is frequently longer than the domestic WHP for the same product.

Both periods vary by product, active ingredient, and animal species, so always check the specific label of the drench used — never assume a WHP or ESI from a previous product applies to a new one. Keep written treatment records (date, product, batch number, dose, and class of stock treated) for every drenching event; this is essential not only for compliance but also for tracking which paddocks or mobs are approaching the end of their withholding period before sale or slaughter.

  • Respect WHP/ESI — check the label for the correct withholding period or export slaughter interval before sale or slaughter.
  • Use dry, clean yards — reduce stress and reinfection risk during handling.

Keeping this checklist on hand in the yards helps ensure every drenching session is accurate, compliant, and effective at protecting both animal welfare and long-term parasite control on the property.
